Before Moving Day (Back to top)

  • Place “Not To Be Moved” tags on any items that are not to be moved. Show these to the movers.
  • Plan easy-to-prepare meals for moving day. Use one carton for dishes, utensils and food for the last meal in the old house and the first in the new one.
  • Clean cupboards, windows and floors in your new residence ahead of time if it is empty.
  • Plan the placement of your furniture. Make a floor plan, tape signs on room doors (for example, Bedroom No. 1) so that furniture and containers will be placed in the correct rooms.

During Moving Day(Back to top)

  • Before our crew arrives, for your peace of mind, it is advisable to arrange for someone to see that children are kept out of the stream of traffic and away from the moving equipment (including trailer or container).
  • Arrange to be home when the moving crew arrives or assign someone (in writing) to direct the crew. Be sure to point out any items that are not to be loaded.
  • Advise the driver of any items that you will require immediately upon arrival at destination. These items will be loaded last and unloaded first upon delivery.
  • Leave all furniture in place, rugs on the floor, cartons and bundles in the rooms in which they were packed or stored. If you wish to save time by dismantling furniture, you will be responsible for reassembly. Bedding can be put in cartons and replaced on the beds in the new house.
  • Make sure that all passageways are left clear and that articles required first in your new house are shown to the driver.
  • Check all cupboards, behind doors and all storage areas before the crew leaves. Make sure that everything that is to go has been loaded and that those items that were not to be moved are still on the premises.
  • Sign the Inventory Listings and keep your copy with your other moving related documents.
  • Review the Bill of Lading to ensure both the Declared Valuation and your new destination address are accurate.
  • Provide us with your en-route contact numbers.

Handling Dangerous Goods(Back to top)

As a matter of public safety, governments at all levels have passed legislation restricting the transportation of dangerous goods. Some commodities may be included in your shipment under controlled conditions, others are prohibited by law. In either case, you must disclose to the Driver every item which poses a hazard and which you intend to include with your shipment.

Carriers such as Bandstra Transportation are required by the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act to accept responsibility for the final decision whether any particular item can be safely included in your shipment. If we feel it presents a danger to our personnel, equipment, or the rest of the shipment, the law requires us to refuse to ship the item.

In order to prepare you in advance, we have developed the following list of dangerous household commodities; some may be shipped and some may not. The items that are allowed to be included in your shipment must be handled according to the instructions listed under Allowable Dangerous Items.

For those items that we cannot ship, it will be your responsibility to dispose of them before you move. Bandstra Transportation cannot do this for you. Most municipal landfills sites have the facilities to hand dangerous goods. Please do not attempt to conceal them within your shipment. This could place the rest our personnel, equipment, and the rest of the shipment in serious danger and invalidate your shipment’s liability protection.

These allowable items must be packed in a carton clearly market “Consumer Commodity – Dangerous Goods Exempt”. A Bandstra Transportation moving consultant will give you the necessary sticker. The carton must be pointed out to the driver at the time of loading. You must declare that these are only dangerous goods (as defined in the Act) that are included in your shipment; this declaration is included on your Bill of Lading.

If you have any specific or general questions about what items are classified as Dangerous Good, or anything inquires about anything else, please contact us today.
