Frequently Asked Questions

Moving is often a time of stress and confusion. To help reduce your concerns, we have provided below the answers to many of the questions most commonly asked by those planning a move. Click a category to see the related questions; click a question to see our answer.
  1. Before the Move
    • How much will it cost to move with Bandstra?
The cost of moves over 150 miles is calculated according to the weight of your goods and the distance they travel. Moves less than 150 miles are charged a flat hourly rate of $95 for a van and crew.
To find out exactly how much your move will cost, please request a quote. The quote will outline all of the services needed for your move, and any associated costs.

    • Will the estimate be guaranteed?
Bandstra Moving will guarantee our estimates as long as all the information we require is provided. Please be sure to point out all items to be moved, both inside and outside of the house or any storage areas outside of the home.

    • What methods of payment are accepted?
If your employer is to be billed for your move, please be sure to arrange this well ahead of time with both Bandstra and your company. If these arrangements have not been made before the delivery date, your shipment will be considered COD.
If you are paying for the move, Bandstra provides a variety of payment options: cash, most major credit cards, certified cheques or bank drafts are all accepted. Credit card payments must be verified before delivery. In addition, COD shipments must be paid before the driver can release the shipment.

  2. Packing Day
    • Can I pack anything myself?
Absolutely, although we strongly recommend that you only pack unbreakable items. Our moving crews have the experience to ensure that breakable items will arrive at their destination intact. Any items packed by the owner travel at the owner's risk.

    • Are there any items that I can't take with me?
Yes. All levels of Government in Canada have passed public safety legislation restricting the transport of dangerous goods. Some items may be shipped under controlled conditions, while others are prohibited by law from being transported. It is required that you disclose to a Bandstra representative all of the potentially hazardous items you intend to include in your move. These include (but are not limited to) items such as gasoline and propane tanks, oxygen canisters, fire extinguishers, ammunition and fireworks. For more information regarding the transport of dangerous goods, please contact us.

    • Do my appliances require any special servicing before the move?
Most machines and appliances need to be prepared by a licensed professional before being moved. Any necessary arrangements can be made by a Bandstra representative. Any appliances not serviced travel at the owner's risk.

  3. Moving Day
    • How long will it take to move my goods?
Because of the many factors affecting the length of time a shipment will take to travel, such as the distance, weather, road conditions, customs, ferry schedules, etc., it is difficult to give precise time estimates. Be sure to allow extra time, and be as flexible as possible when planning your moving schedule.

    • Can my delivery date be guaranteed?
Yes. Based on the weight of the shipment and the distance it must travel, a "delivery spread" is calculated. If possible, delivery will be on the date you request. If delivery is delayed beyond the date guaranteed to you for any reason, you will be reimbursed for reasonable food and lodging expenses.

    • How does the driver keep track of my goods?
On load day, all items to be moved are inventoried. Each item is numbered, and a description of the condition is listed on the inventory sheet. Your signature is required on the inventory to confirm that you agree with the accuracy of the descriptions. On delivery, you will check each item off on the inventory as it enters your new home.

  4. After the Move
    • What if I cannot take delivery of my goods as scheduled?
If for any reason you cannot take prompt delivery of your goods, Bandstra can arrange storage of your belongings in a secure, clean warehouse until you are ready to accept them. Storage is at an additional charge.

    • What can I expect on delivery?
Upon arrival, the Van Operator will provide a copy of the "Inventory Check-Off Listing". As each item is delivered, it is checked off. Any loss or damage is noted on the Van Operator's copy of the inventory, which will serve to substantiate a claim if you should have reason to submit one.

    • Who can I call if I misplace my driver's contact numbers?
Please feel free to contact any one of our offices for help or advice at any time. Our contact information can be found here.
