Beyond the Delivery at Bandstra: Bugwood Coffee

Bugwood Coffee is a great example of how a small idea can grow into something much bigger. Owner Nick Meyer started the business with a simple goal — to create a place where people could connect over really good coffee.
“Bugwood Coffee is kind of the quintessential café startup,”
It all began with a small espresso trailer at the local farmers market. As the business grew and the community response was strong, Nick moved from the mobile setup to a café on Main Street that he built himself.
From there, the focus went deeper into the craft of coffee. Bugwood began roasting its own beans, investing in larger roasting equipment and expanding storage as demand increased.
Coffee itself starts as a green bean grown in regions along the equator. Those beans travel a long way before they end up in Smithers, where Bugwood roasts them to bring out their full flavor. “You have to monitor the heat, airflow and time to cook those beans to perfection,” Nick explains.
“Bandstra is responsible for basically everything that we bring in here and everything we send out..they show up at our door, take it away, and it shows up at our clients’ door.”
Behind the scenes, logistics plays a big role in making it all work. Green coffee beans arrive in large shipments, and once roasted, the finished coffee needs to reach customers quickly to stay fresh. That’s where Bandstra comes in. For Nick, having a logistics partner he can rely on has made a big difference as the business has grown.
“Not having to worry about receiving coffee or shipping it out has allowed us to grow the business from using a bag of coffee a week to using a pallet of coffee a week... Bandstra’s been a pretty big part of that.”
