After more than 17 years with Bandstra Transportation, Wade Koppen has worn many hats — local driver, warehouse worker, lead hand, and whatever else is needed to help get the job done.
His answer to why he’s stayed so long is simple: the people.

“I enjoy dealing with my customers. I enjoy dealing with my co-workers. The dispatchers are fantastic.”
Based out of our Abbotsford terminal, Koppen works primarily as a local five-ton driver covering Richmond and surrounding areas, with routes that can stretch from East Richmond and Steveston to South Vancouver and Delta. And according to him, no two days look the same.
“Every day is different,” he explains. “You never know what you’re getting into, but it’s normally a very enjoyable day.”
For Koppen, the work goes beyond transportation. It’s about relationships — with customers, coworkers, and the communities he serves daily. “The nice thing about coming to some places you’re used to is they just kind of look and say, ‘Oh look, Bandstra,’” he says.
Those familiar faces and long-standing connections are part of what makes the role rewarding after nearly two decades.
But Koppen says Bandstra’s workplace culture is what stands out most.
“If somebody needs a hand, people are there to help... The more hands, the quicker the job gets done.”

At the centre of his approach is advice passed down from his father:
“Don’t worry about what other people are doing. Just worry about your own job,” Koppen recalls. “If you focus on your own work, the other things will fall into place.”
That mindset — work hard, help others, and take pride in doing the job well — has guided Koppen through nearly two decades at Bandstra.
As transportation continues evolving, employees like Wade remind us that experience, teamwork, and relationships remain at the heart of the industry.
