Life on the Road: Mike Andrews
So, what does a typical day look like for a Bandstra driver in Northern BC?
Bandstra's Linehaul Driver Mike Andrews takes us along his route from Prince George to Smithers, sharing what life on the road is really like — from early morning departures to the scenic drives, healthy habits, and teamwork that keep freight moving across the region.
Mike’s route includes stops in Vanderhoof, Burns Lake, and Houston before switching trailers in Smithers and heading back to Prince George. And for Mike, one of the best parts of being a linehaul driver is the journey itself.
“I love the drive. We get to see some fantastic places and meet some wonderful people. The communities are great.”
Preparation is key to staying healthy and focused while driving long distances. Mike makes a point of planning his meals and avoiding the temptation of drive-through food.
Instead, he packs meals like spinach quesadillas, fruit, and vegetables so he can stay energized throughout the day.
The modern equipment also makes the job easier. Mike drives a Kenworth T680, equipped with air-ride suspension and driver-friendly controls that make long days behind the wheel more comfortable.
Safety and respect are essential for everyone sharing the road. “If somebody lets me by, I flash my lights and say thank you. It’s just respect. Everybody treats everybody fairly on the highway.” Professional drivers rely on communication and courtesy to keep traffic flowing safely, especially on busy or challenging routes.
“I’ve got my hat off to everybody that works in the office, the warehouse, and the yard. If it wasn’t for them, the day would be twice as long and twice as hectic.”
